Named after the mythical Titan condemned to carry the sky on his shoulders, the solid legs of the Atlas stool stand firm and lift the rounded seat. The meeting and contrast between leg and seat is central to the design, where each element exaggerates the other, creating the stool's distinct presence and brutalist feel. John Astbury drew inspiration for Atlas from several points in architectural history. There are references to porticos and colonnades, but Atlas is especially based on the basic archetypal post-and-lintel construction consisting of posts and a lintel. Put together with simple geometry, the circle and the square, these are the completely fundamental archetypes that together create the stool's composition and character. The Atlas stool from New Works can fulfill many different purposes, functioning as a seat or side table and enriching a room as an independent sculptural object.
