New Works Atlas Stool, Oak

Named after the mythical Titan condemned to carry the heavens on his shoulders, the Atlas stool's solid legs stand firm, lifting the rounded seat. The meeting and contrast between the legs and the seat are central to the design, where each element exaggerates the other, creating the stool's distinct presence and brutalist feel. John Astbury drew inspiration for Atlas from several points in architectural history. There are references to porticos and colonnades, but Atlas is particularly built on the basic archetypal post-and-lintel construction consisting of posts and a lintel. Put together with simple geometry, the circle and the square, these are the fundamental archetypes that together create the stool's composition and character. The Atlas stool from New Works can fulfill many different purposes, functioning as a seat or side table and enriching a room as an independent sculptural object.
