Named after the mythical Titan condemned to bear the heavens on his shoulders, the solid legs of the Atlas Dining table stand firm to elevate the spacious tabletop. The meeting and contrast between the legs and the tabletop are central to the design, where each element accentuates the other, creating the table's distinct presence and brutalist feel. John Astbury drew inspiration for Atlas from various points in architectural history. There are references to porticos and colonnades, but Atlas is primarily built upon the basic, archetypal post-and-lintel construction consisting of columns and a crossbeam.
